West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) is asking drivers, operators and residents for their views on a proposed refresh of its taxi and private hire licensing policy. The consultation covers Northampton, Daventry and South Northamptonshire and runs for eight weeks, closing at midnight on Sunday 6 December, according to the Northampton Chronicle & Echo.
What is being proposed?
The draft would clarify English language requirements, update medical standards and revise how criminal record checks are handled. Drivers could also have updated duties to notify the council about certain incidents and changes in their circumstances.
For vehicles, the council is considering removing requirements to carry a first-aid kit and fire extinguisher. It also proposes updated identification and door-sign rules, including restrictions on private hire vehicles displaying terms such as “Taxi” or “Cab”. The council says Euro 6 emissions standards would remain for new and replacement vehicles. A wider review of taxi zones is being postponed.
Another proposed adjustment would move the age threshold linked to driver medical examinations from 60 to 65. These are consultation proposals; they are not all changes currently in force.
Have your say
WNC says the review follows feedback from drivers and operators and aims to make the system clearer while maintaining passenger safety. Drivers, vehicle owners, operators and residents can respond before the consultation closes on 6 December.
